Dissoi Logoi

Both Sides of the Argument

sub-header

Dissoi Logoi will present each issue as a diptych -- Art photography and visual rhetoric. Sometimes side-by-side, sometimes all mashed up and sometimes together in the same photo.

Each issue we will present single photos -- both art and visual rhetoric -- one art portfolio, and three photo essays.

Single Photos: Simply put, send us a good shot. Be sure to let us know who you are. If you want, let us know what you want the audience to know about your shot.

Art Portfolios: Please send no more than 10 shots. You can email us links or send the shots as attachments. We'll wrap them in Simple Viewer and present them as a slideshow.

Photo Essays: Please send 5, 7 or 9 shots. If your essay is more than 9 shots, email us and we'll discuss it. Since this is a photo essay, the photos all need to have a rhetorical theme -- you can be documenting an event, pointing out some great social ill, celebrating the life of someone you know or anything that makes up an essay -- it's up to you. Just make sure they tell a story. The story is everything. Please also include either one small paragraph to accompany each photo or a .wav or .mp3 file with you telling us about the story in your photos. We'll put the the sound file together with the photos and present them as one big gestalt on the site.

We love photography no matter whether it's wet-plate, scanned negatives, scanned prints, digital images, or just about anything else. Want to send us your cyanotypes or VanDykes or something you took with your Holga or Leica or your grampa's Rolleicord? No problem at all. It's your vision and as long as it's not breaking any laws, we're not going to censor you.

Having said that, we need to point out that we think that Art is pretty much anything goes with a camera but Journalism needs to be pretty much straight photography. Photo illustration isn't our thing unless it makes a very clear artistic or rhetorical statement.
